NGA Geospatial Platform Modernization

Kubernetes to OpenShift · Mission data platform

An NGA web, API, and database microservice needed to move from a Kubernetes deployment model into an enterprise OpenShift environment while continuing to support geospatial and data-access workflows at mission scale.

Delivered through a subcontractor relationship supporting the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) as the end customer. This case study does not imply a direct contractual relationship with NGA.

01

The challenge

The existing service relied on Kubernetes containers and Terraform-managed infrastructure. The target environment required a different release model, private artifact handling, enterprise CI/CD controls, and compatibility with a broader platform handling petabyte-scale geospatial data across more than 30 sources.

02

What we built

We migrated the application to Docker images, Helm packaging, private container repositories, and GitLab runners for deployment into OpenShift. The work covered the web, API, and database layers and integrated with the surrounding observability and data platform, including Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, NiFi, SQL, Oracle, and API-based workflows.

03

The result

The service moved into the enterprise OpenShift delivery model with repeatable packaging and deployment. Its application and data-access workflows remained connected to a larger geospatial platform operating across more than 30 data sources and petabyte-scale holdings.
